The Theme and Variations was inspired by Marc-André Hamelin's fiancée, Cathy Fuller, and the theme is intended to be a musical portrait of her.

Recording & Production
Two of the Études on this album, Nos. 9 and 10, are not new recordings but were taken from an earlier Hyperion CD, 'The Composer-Pianists'.
Composition History
The Études were written over a period of almost twenty-five years, and the composer tried to shape them into a satisfying whole despite being written out of sequence.
