Josef Schelb, born in 1894, was the fifth son of a music-loving rural doctor in Bad Krozingen, Germany.
Performer Biography
Radovan Vlatković, the horn player on this album, won First Prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich in 1983, after the prize had not been awarded to a horn player for 14 years.

Most of Josef Schelb's early compositions were destroyed in an air raid on Karlsruhe in 1942.

Josef Schelb's specialty was the polyphonic treatment of motifs and themes, which he handled strictly or playfully, always with a touch of Romantic sensuality.

Josef Schelb incorporated impressionism, expressionism, atonality, and twelve-tone techniques into his unique style, but never exclusively committed to any one of them.

Schelb's studies in Geneva with Liszt-student Bernhard Stavenhagen and Bach-champion Otto Barblan were formative for his development as a composer.
