Donald Grant, the second violinist, plays on the violin of Christopher Rowland, a founding father of the Elias String Quartet who passed away in 2007.

Performer Biography

The Elias String Quartet chose their name, 'Elias', as the Anglicized version of 'Elijah', one of the best-loved works by Mendelssohn, a composer they deeply admire.

Interpretation

The Elias String Quartet worked with Hungarian composer György Kurtág on Mozart's 'Dissonance' quartet, which led them to make each musical gesture more expressive and to bring out the music's simplicity.

Recording & Production

This album was recorded live at Wigmore Hall, London, on December 29, 2008, during the bicentenary year of Felix Mendelssohn's birth.

Instruments

First violinist Sara Bitlloch performs on a new violin commissioned from Frederic Chaudiere, which was only one month old and not yet played-in at the time of this recording.

The Elias String Quartet was founded in 1998, with its gestation beginning earlier when cellist Marie Bitlloch and violinist Donald Grant met at the Royal Northern College of Music.
