Composer Biography
Schubert's return to the string quartet in 1824 coincided with a period of deep despair, marked by the first symptoms of syphilis and a protracted hospital stay.
Critical Reception
Ignaz Schuppanzigh, to whom Schubert dedicated his quartets, found the 'Death and the Maiden' Quartet so challenging that he advised Schubert to stick to writing songs.
Composition History
Of Schubert's many large-scale chamber masterpieces, only the A minor Quartet was published during his lifetime.
Compositional Technique
The 'Death and the Maiden' Quartet is unique among works by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven for casting all four of its movements in the minor key, creating an 'overabundance of sombreness'.
Recording & Production
This album marks the first recording in a new collaboration between the Takács Quartet and Hyperion Records.
Composer's Artistic Vision
In 1824, Schubert expressed a new determination to make a bid for posterity, intending to compose quartets as a way to pave the way towards a 'grand symphony'.
