None of Schubert's symphonic music was known during his lifetime, with the 'Great' C major Symphony first publicly performed in 1839 and the 'Unfinished' B minor Symphony in 1867.

Schubert subtitled his Symphony No. 4 'Tragic' and in it, he aimed to emulate the heroic tension of Beethoven's great works in the key of C minor.

Schubert's first six symphonies, including Symphony No. 1 on this album, appeared between his ages of sixteen and twenty-one, charting his emergence through the styles of Haydn, Mozart, and early Beethoven.

Schubert completed his First Symphony in October 1813, the same month he left the Imperial and Royal Seminary to pursue a career as a freelance composer.

Schubert's opera 'Fierrabras' was commissioned for the Vienna Court Opera in 1823 but was not staged until 1897, after another opera, 'Euryanthe' by Weber, proved a flop.
