Composer Biography

Franz Schubert began composing music for his school orchestra at the age of 12, rapidly progressing from second to first violins.

Composer's Artistic Vision

In his Sixth Symphony, Schubert's proximity to Ludwig van Beethoven is clear, but he also shows great fondness for Rossini, whose operas were very successful in Vienna at the time.

The Sixth Symphony marks the first time Schubert replaced a symphonic minuet with a Beethovenian scherzo.

Both Schubert's Fifth and Sixth Symphonies were composed for semi-private concerts held in the home of Otto Hartwig, where Schubert also played in the orchestra.
