Since 2019, Mathieu Gaudet has been recording the complete piano music of Franz Schubert on the Analekta label, a project that will ultimately comprise 15 albums.

Compositional Technique

The Sonata No. 14, D. 840, is a resolutely orchestral work, composed at the same time as Schubert's Symphony No. 9 'The Great', and features sections that evoke woodwinds, strings, brass, and even timpani.

Schubert wrote his first 11 sonatas between the ages of 18 and 21, and the Sonata No. 12 in A Major, D. 664, was composed in 1819 for Josephine von Koller, an 18-year-old woman.

Schubert's Sonata No. 14 in C Major, D. 840, was nicknamed 'Reliquie' by its first publisher in 1861, who mistakenly believed it was Schubert's last sonata left incomplete at his death.

The incomplete movements of Schubert's Sonata No. 14, D. 840, were completed by pianist Mathieu Gaudet for this recording, with help from editions by Schubert specialist Paul Badura-Skoda.
