Before his current professorship, Heiner Schindler was the principal clarinetist of the Staatskapelle Berlin for many years, performing globally under Daniel Barenboim.
Interpretation
The performers consciously use the chalumeau register of the clarinet for the Märchenbilder and the basset horn for the Adagio und Allegro to achieve the closest possible approximation to the original instrumentation.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Schumann brought a new aspect to his character pieces with the term "Märchen" (fairy tale), which, unlike "Fantasie," refers to a clearer thematic dimension in the music.
Composition History
Most of the compositions on this CD, except for the Märchenbilder (1851), date from 1849, which Schumann considered his most productive year.
Performer Biography
Olha Chipak, the pianist on this album, was born in Odessa, Ukraine, and completed her piano studies with a concert exam at the Music Academy in Lwiw and in piano duo at the HMT Rostock.
