Composer Biography

Robert Schumann's daughter, Eugenie Schumann, had no memory of her father as she was only two years and three months old when he was taken to Endenich in March 1854.

Composition History

Robert Schumann's Piano Quintet, Op. 44, was written for his wife Clara Schumann, a renowned pianist, and premiered at a private party in December 1842 with Félix Mendelssohn playing the piano.

Critical Reception

Richard Aldrich observed that Schumann's chamber music of 1842, including the Piano Quintet, is among the most perfect products of his genius, strong in form and balanced in substance.
