Schumann composed an extraordinary number of songs in 1840, known as his 'Year of Song', including the 26 songs of Myrthen, Op. 25.

The Sechs Gedichte und Requiem, Op. 90, is a tribute to the poet Nikolaus Lenau, completed by Schumann after hearing of Lenau's supposed death in 1850.
