Peter Orth, the pianist on this recording, won First Prize in the 1979 Naumburg International Piano Competition, leading to his acclaimed recital debut in Alice Tully Hall.

Robert Schumann completed the sketch of his Piano Quintet in just six days in September 1842, with the first version of the score finished by October 12.

While works for piano and strings existed before Robert Schumann, his Piano Quintet Op. 44 established the piano quintet as a recognized genre, later followed by composers like Brahms and Dvořák.
