As a child, Alexander Scriabin (or Sasha) was exposed to dance music through his young uncles, who played instruments after returning from military academy.
Performer Biography
Andrey Gugnin, the pianist on this recording, won the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2016 and the BBC Music Magazine Instrumental award in 2020.
Compositional Technique
Scriabin's Op. 40 Mazurkas come from his 'middle period' and show his music moving away from traditional tonality, influenced by his belief that truth is an illusion.
Composition History
Scriabin's Op. 3 and Op. 25 Mazurkas mark the beginning and end of his 'first' period of composition, with Op. 25 coinciding with his first symphony.
