Performer Biography
Paul Mann, the conductor, is known for his collaborations with the London Symphony Orchestra, including performances with Deep Purple and Jon Lord's Concerto for Group and Orchestra.
Composer Biography
Leif Solberg, the composer, was a marginal figure in Norwegian musical life, largely due to his traditionalist style clashing with the modernism prevalent in the second half of the twentieth century.
Compositional Technique
The Symphony features an unusual tonal design, with the first movement in G minor and the rest of the work unequivocally in D, yet maintains structural coherence.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Solberg's organ music, written in the late-Romantic tradition, takes inspiration from Bach, Franck, and Reger, but replaces German chorales with Norwegian folk-music melodies.
Composition History
The Symphony, Solberg's only original orchestral work, was composed in 1951-52 and was inspired by the death of his brother Rolv Einar from a war injury.
