Composition History
Stanford's Clarinet Concerto was initially written for and dedicated to the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, for whom Brahms had also written several chamber works, but Mühlfeld rejected it.

Robert Plane, the clarinet soloist, is Principal Clarinet of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and has a particular passion for British music.
