1/7Composer's Artistic Vision
The Genesis Foundation's commissions, including those on this album, are inspired by John Studzinski's devotion to the Catholic faith and his love of Christian poetry.
Cultural Impact
The Eton Choirbook is the largest and most valuable document of early Tudor church music still in existence, and its survival was crucial for preserving the music of its age.
Historical Context
The Eton Choirbook, which contains spectacular music from around 1500, is one of the few such books to survive, as most were destroyed during the Reformation or discarded as musical fashions changed.
Composition History
This album includes three new commissions by Phillip Cooke, Marco Galvani, and Joseph Phibbs, which are settings of texts whose original settings by William Cornysh and Walter Lambe are also featured.
Historical Context
The Genesis Foundation's commissioning template, which led to works on this album, was triggered by Pope Benedict XVI's 2005 wish to reform music in the Catholic church worldwide.
Recording & Production
The Sixteen ensures that all their commissioned projects are recorded for commercial release through their own record label, CORO, to give them enduring life.
Composition History
This album is part of an ongoing collaboration between Harry Christophers, founder of The Sixteen, and the Genesis Foundation, initiated in 2006.
