Hans Leo Hassler's Protestant religion did not prevent his appointment in 1586 to the Catholic Fugger Count Oktavian II in Augsburg, where he served as chamber organist and organist at St. Moritz church.

Most of Hans Leo Hassler's professional life was spent as an organist, contributing to his reputation as a pedagogue and organ expert, though his place of honor among Renaissance composers is mainly due to his vocal works.
Performer Biography
Joseph Kelemen is an acknowledged specialist in 'ancient fingering' and an expert on German organ music of the 17th century and the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Instruments
This recording features two historic organs: the Johannes-Freundt-Orgel from 1642 in Klosterneuburg, Austria, and the Marx-Günzer-Orgel from 1609 in Gabelbach, Germany.
Compositional Technique
Hassler was the first keyboard composer north of the Alps to study in Italy, and he frequently used the Venetian polychoral practice in his Italian-oriented Introitus, Canzoni, and Ricercari.
