Franz von Suppé moved to Vienna at age sixteen and, to pay for his music studies with Ignaz von Seyfried and Simon Sechter, he gave Italian lessons, never losing his Italian accent.

Despite his parents' wishes for him to study law, Franz von Suppé was encouraged in music by his distant relative, the great Italian opera composer Gaetano Donizetti, who was one of his first teachers.

Franz von Suppé was known as 'the Viennese Offenbach' and was instrumental in introducing many of Jacques Offenbach's operettas to Vienna, later creating his own works to counter Offenbach's influence.
