Constantine Orbelian, the conductor, is the first American to become music director of an ensemble in Russia, specifically the Moscow Chamber Orchestra.

Composition History

Dvořák's Cello Concerto was written in New York City between November 1894 and February 1895.

The recording was sponsored by DésysIF and ACS, whose generosity made the album possible.

Composition History

Dvořák revised the coda of the Cello Concerto's finale to include a song, "Lasst mich allein" (Leave me alone), which was a favorite of his late sister-in-law Josefina.

Instruments

The cellist, Suzanne Ramon, plays a superb 1690 Andreas Guarnerius cello, which she describes as having an "amber-gold sound."

This recording was made in June 2006 at the Tchaikovsky Great Hall in Moscow.

In January 2004, Russian President Putin awarded Constantine Orbelian the title 'Honored Artist of Russia,' a title never before given to a non-Russian citizen.
