Marin Alsop, the conductor, studied at Yale University and the Juilliard School, and won the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize at Tanglewood Music Center, where she was a pupil of Leonard Bernstein.

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 was written during a period of significant personal difficulty, including a brief and disastrous marriage and a nervous breakdown.

Tchaikovsky provided a program for his Symphony No. 4, suggesting the opening theme represents 'Fate,' an invincible force to which one must resign.
