The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1946 by Sir Thomas Beecham, who envisioned an orchestra that would bring great music to every corner of the United Kingdom.

Composition History

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, 'Pathétique', was his last completed work, finished in August 1893 and premiered on October 28 of the same year.

Performer Biography

Daniele Gatti, the conductor on this album, has been the Music Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra since 1996 and also the Music Director of Bologna's Teatro Comunale since 1998.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Tchaikovsky intended the program of his 'Pathétique' Symphony to be an enigma for everyone but himself, describing its theme as full of subjective feeling.

Composer Biography

Tchaikovsky's last years were outwardly triumphant, with him being elected to the Académie Française and receiving an honorary Doctorate of Music from Cambridge University.

Compositional Technique

The title 'Pathétique' for Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 was suggested by his brother Modest, meaning 'impassioned' rather than 'symphony of suffering'.
