Composer Biography

Georg Philipp Telemann, a composer active in Hamburg since 1721, wrote the cantata Ino and the Orchestral Suite TWV 55:D23 when he was in his 80s.

Recording & Production

This album is a co-production with Deutschlandfunk and was recorded at Deutschlandfunk Kammermusiksaal, Köln, in January 2014.

Compositional Technique

The D major Overture Suite features a 'Plainte' (lament) in D minor alternating with a 'Gaillarde' in D major, forms that were no longer fashionable in the early 18th century.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Telemann's Orchestral Suite TWV 55:D23, composed in 1763, blends modern stylistic elements with older, retrospective tendencies, reflecting on a genre that was dying out.

Critical Reception

Christian Gottfried Krause, a Berlin lawyer and private musician, published an arrangement of Telemann's Ino that was publicly attributed to Krause himself, with Telemann remaining uncredited.

Telemann's cantata Ino, based on a text by Karl Wilhelm Ramler, was composed in 1765, the same year Ramler's text was first published.

The score used for this recording of Telemann's Ino is a newly cleaned version, aiming to be closer to Telemann's lost original manuscript than previous editions.
