This album features the world premiere recordings of Eugène Ysaÿe's final versions of his two string trios, Op. 33 and Op. 34, based on recently published editions.

Eugène Ysaÿe, a globe-trotting master of the violin and viola, was also a gifted cellist, a violin professor, a self-taught composer, and a highly-regarded conductor.

Ysaÿe's family had a strong musical heritage, with his great-grandfather's four children all being musicians and his father being a professional violinist and opera conductor.
Compositional Technique
Ysaÿe's String Trio No. 2, Op. 34, composed shortly after the First Trio, is a more modern work with jagged dissonances and a driven pulsation, evoking a rustic atmosphere reminiscent of Bartok.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Ysaÿe's Six Violin Sonatas, Op. 27, were conceived in one night in 1923, inspired by Joseph Szigeti's performance of Bach's G minor violin sonata.
Composition History
The String Trio No. 1, Op. 33, also known as 'Le Chimay', was rediscovered in the mid-1990s, decades after Ysaÿe's death.
Performer Biography
Elmira Darvarova, the violinist on this album, was the first and only female concertmaster in the history of the Metropolitan Opera.
