1/6Composer's Artistic Vision
Composer Douglas Boyce, like Stravinsky, believes the ontological foundation of music is temporal, not sonic, using sound to reshape everyday time.
Composition History
"Sails Knife-bright in a Seasonal Wind" is dedicated to composer Douglas Boyce's son, Tiernan, and its title comes from Derek Mahon's poem "Achill."
Compositional Technique
The piece "Quintet l'homme armé" subjects the pervasive 15th-century melody 'L'homme armé' to such drastic transformations that it becomes largely unrecognizable.
Recording & Production
The album features a range of recording styles, from live concert recordings to live studio sessions and more intricate composite productions.
Performer Biography
Trio Cavatina, featured on "Piano Quartet No. 2," was a partner on composer Douglas Boyce's prior New Focus Recordings release.
Album & Artwork
The album's title track, "The Hunt by Night," draws inspiration from Paolo Uccello's 1470 painting and Derek Mahon's 1970 poem of the same name.
