Unlike his 'English Suites' and 'French Suites,' Bach gave each of the Partitas a unique opening movement, such as a 'Praeambulum,' 'Fantasia,' or French 'Ouverture.'

Bach's opus number I for the Partitas was not his first composition, but rather indicated his first work to appear in print, following the custom of his time.

Composer György Ligeti, a prominent figure in contemporary music, highly praised Evgeni Koroliov's Bach recordings, stating he would choose them if he could only take one work to a desert island.

Bach published the Partitas, which he assigned opus number I, at his own risk starting in 1726, making them his first self-published works.

Compositional Technique

The Partitas were originally titled 'Keyboard Practice Consisting of Preludes, Allemandes, Courantes, Sarabandes, Gigues, Minuets, and other Gallantries,' suggesting a varied collection of dance movements.

Recording & Production

This album was recorded in two different locations: the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin in February 2020 and the Liebfrauenkirche in Wernigerode in June 2023.

Performer Biography

Evgeni Koroliov, the pianist on this album, was a student at the legendary Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, where he studied with notable teachers like Heinrich Neuhaus and Maria Yudina.
