1/7Historical Context
Christophe Plantin, a 16th-century publisher-printer, is considered one of the greatest of his era, known for producing high-quality books in terms of both content and form.
Compositional Technique
Plantin used a 'single printing' technique for his music editions, where each note type was designed on its corresponding stave segment, ensuring high workmanship.
Composition History
After 20 years in publishing, Plantin ventured into his first major polyphonic music edition, the Octo Missae of George de la Hèle, in 1578, using materials originally intended for an antiphonary requested by Philip II.
Historical Context
Plantin preferred publishing editions dedicated to the works of a single composer, especially choir books, and often expected a substantial financial contribution from the composer due to low profitability.
Historical Context
Christophe Plantin's legacy, including his books, archives, and business contents, is preserved and can be seen today in the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp.
Recording & Production
This recording was produced in cooperation with the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, which also provided image and text contributions.
Historical Context
Around 1580, Plantin saw an economic opportunity to print music as there were no other large music publishers active in the Netherlands.
