Upon his retirement from the New York Philharmonic in 2014, Philip Smith joined the faculty at the University of Georgia's Hugh Hodgson School of Music as the William F. and Pamela P. Prokasy Professor in the Arts.

Philip Smith, the featured trumpeter, first learned to play the cornet from his father, cornet virtuoso Derek Smith, and toured with his father's Salvation Army New York Staff Band.

Philip Smith served as Co-Principal Trumpet of the New York Philharmonic for ten years, sharing the title with John Ware, before becoming Principal Trumpet from 1988 to 2014.

Philip Smith studied at The Juilliard School from 1970 to 1975 under Edward Tuertel and William Vacchiano, who was the New York Philharmonic's Principal Trumpet.
