Performer Biography
Fabien Gabel, the conductor on this album, began his musical career as a trumpeter, studying at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and playing with various Parisian orchestras under prominent conductors before becoming a conductor.
Composer's Artistic Vision
André Jolivet believed that jazz profoundly influenced trumpet repertoire and technique, making it difficult to compose for the instrument without considering the new possibilities introduced by Black American trumpeters.
Interpretation
The reconstruction and orchestration of the missing music for Henri Tomasi's Trumpet Concerto, which only survived as a piano reduction, was a joint effort by Håkan Hardenberger, Fabien Gabel, Claude Tomasi, and Franck Villard.
Recording & Production
This album features the first commercial recording of Henri Tomasi's Trumpet Concerto with its original ending, which includes about 60 additional bars in the final movement.

Florent Schmitt, nicknamed 'the boar of the Ardennes,' composed a large body of works known for their rich color palette and rhythmic power, but he is little known today partly due to his strong character and perceived complacency towards Nazi Germany.
