Recording & Production

The album features Frode Andersen on accordion and Shara Nova on voice, with music by David Lang.

Instruments

The album's soundtrack is primarily played by a single accordion, chosen to symbolize a 'single set of lungs diving into the ocean to retrieve this story'.

Historical Context

The film reels were recovered from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, near the geological division between the continental plates of East and West.

Composition History

The composer David Lang was chosen to write the score after the death of Jóhann Jóhannsson, who had originally been approached for the project.

Composition History

The film Derevensky Detektiv (1969) is not rare or lost; it is well-known to Russians of a certain age and is still shown on television in Russia regularly.

Composition History

The film that inspired this album, Derevensky Detektiv (1969), was discovered by a commercial fisherman in Iceland, who found four reels of the Soviet film in his net.
