Composition History

Scarlatti composed the majority of his sonatas for his student Maria Barbara, who became Queen of Spain in 1729, and he accompanied her to the court in Madrid.

Compositional Technique

Scarlatti, a virtuoso harpsichordist, modestly labeled many of his sonatas as 'Essercizi per gravicembalo' (Exercises for harpsichord), containing every conceivable technical challenge.

Critical Reception

Only a few of Fanny Hensel's over 450 compositions were published during her lifetime, some even under her brother's name, with proper recognition beginning only in the 1980s.
