Anne Manson, the conductor, was the first woman to conduct at the prestigious Salzburg Festival and one of only three women to be music director of a leading American symphony orchestra.

The tuba, though belonging to an ancient family of instruments, was officially patented in Germany on September 12, 1835, and became a regular orchestra member in the latter half of the 19th century.
