This recording of Tubin's First Symphony by Neeme Järvi and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, made in October 1986, is only the fourth performance of the work.
Composition History
Tubin composed his First Symphony during afternoons between 1931 and 1934, as he was busy conducting at the 'Vanemuine' theatre and leading two choirs.
Performer Biography
Neeme Järvi, the conductor, made his conducting debut at 18 and won first prize at an international conducting competition in Rome in 1971, leading to worldwide invitations.

Emanuil Sheynkman, the balalaika soloist, was the youngest laureate ever at the International Competition for Stringed Instrument Performers in Warsaw in 1954.
Composition History
Tubin initially refused to write his Balalaika Concerto because the instrument was primarily known in Estonia for Russian entertainment music, but was persuaded by balalaika player Nicolaus Zwetnow.

Eduard Tubin, the composer, was born in 1905 in Kallaste, Estonia, and fled to Sweden with his family in September 1944, living and working in Stockholm until his death in 1982.
