Turina began composing En el cortijo in 1936 but interrupted his work due to the Spanish Civil War, resuming and finishing it in 1939-1940.

In Las musas de Andalucía, Turina aimed to avoid monotony by interpreting the Greek Muses broadly and portraying them using a variety of timbres and instrumental combinations.
Composition History
The works Jardins d'Andalousie and Le Quartier de Santa Cruz originally emerged from a single idea by Turina to create two pieces under the overall heading of 'Impresiones de Sevilla'.
