Giacomo Puccini's most significant chamber work, Crisantemi, was written in 1890 as a threnody after learning of the death of Prince Amedeo di Savoia.
Compositional Technique
Puccini later reused two important melodic themes from his string quartet Crisantemi in the third and fourth acts of his opera Manon Lescaut.
Composition History
Giuseppe Verdi, initially annoyed by Italian Quartet Societies promoting Austro-German chamber music, controversially suggested founding Vocal Quartet Societies instead.
Composer Biography
Riccardo Zandonai, born in 1883, was an Austrian citizen until 1918, though he trained musically in Italy at the Liceo Musicale of Pesaro.
Composition History
Verdi composed his String Quartet in E minor almost secretly in Naples in 1873, during a stay to supervise a staging of his opera Aida.
