1/7Composition History
The Concerto for Mandolin, RV 425, was most likely dedicated to Marquis Guido Bentivoglio d'Aragona, a Ferrarese patron and amateur mandolin player with whom Vivaldi had a close relationship.
Compositional Technique
The influence of Neapolitan musical taste pervades much of Vivaldi's compositions, as seen in the Concerto RV 405 and the Adagio of the RV 517 Concerto.
Historical Context
Venice, during Vivaldi's era, was a cosmopolitan center with significant commercial and cultural exchanges from various parts of Europe and the Middle East.
Interpretation
The third movement of Sinfonia RV 168 features a long improvisation on the Greek lyra by Giordano Antonelli, performed in the style of Ottoman Taksim or as a Ricercare, revealing a Slavic theme.
Instruments
The cello, an instrument with extremely fluid tuning and organological variety, was referred to by various names in Venice alone, including viola, English cello, violone, and bassetto.
Historical Context
Musicological research confirms that popular themes, Slavic Venetian seafarers' songs, and oriental liturgical songs continuously influenced Venetian Baroque works.
Interpretation
Giordano Antonelli, the conductor of Musica Antiqua Latina, approaches Vivaldi's works by taking color and light as his guidelines, while also incorporating echoes of the Orient that were present in Venice during Vivaldi's time.
