1/7Compositional Technique
Vivaldi's cello concertos, unlike his bassoon concertos, span his entire career, ranging from pedagogical pieces to his most inspired works.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded by Little Tribeca at the Église évangélique luthérienne Saint Pierre in Paris from August 27 to September 3, 2019.
Instruments
Ophélie Gaillard, the cellist and musical director, plays a Francesco Goffriller cello from 1737, generously loaned by the CIC, and an anonymous Flemish violoncello piccolo.
Composition History
The Concerto for two cellos, RV 531, was likely intended for the all-girl orchestra of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, where Vivaldi composed and taught violin.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Antonio Vivaldi, the Venetian composer, wrote over a hundred compositions for the bassoon and cello, more than any other composer to date.
Compositional Technique
Vivaldi often used a 'false treble clef' in his cello parts, writing passages in treble clef with the understanding that the performer would play an octave lower.
Composition History
The slow movement of Vivaldi's Concerto in B flat major 'per Teresa', RV 788, was reconstructed for this album as a tribute to Teresa, one of Vivaldi's most brilliant students at the Pietà.
