This album is the fourth installment of the complete Weinberg Violin Sonatas, with the first two volumes each winning a Diapason d'Or award.

Composition History

The Largo in F major, a movement from Weinberg's Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano, Op. 15, was rediscovered in the private collection of his friend, musicologist Manashir Yakubov, after Yakubov's death in 2012.

Performer Biography

Yuri Kalnits, one of the violinists on this album, received two Diapasons d'Or for his previous recordings of Weinberg's violin sonatas.

Composer Biography

Mieczysław Weinberg's father was a violinist and composer for touring Jewish theatre companies, and Weinberg began his musical journey by accompanying him at the theatre as a pianist at age ten or eleven.

Performer Biography

Igor Yuzefovich, the second violinist, is currently in his third season as Concertmaster of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Historical Context

Many of Weinberg's early compositions are presumed lost during his flight from the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939 to Belorussia.

Historical Context

Weinberg was arrested in February 1953 under the accusation of 'Jewish bourgeois nationalism' and incarcerated in Butyrka and Lubyanka prisons, but was released after Stalin's death the following month.
