Mieczysław Weinberg, the composer, was born in Warsaw in 1919 and was known as a highly-regarded pianist before fleeing the Nazi invasion.

Weinberg faced personal setbacks, including the murder of his father-in-law, Solomon Mikhoels, and his own imprisonment for alleged 'Jewish subversion' until Stalin's death in 1953.

Composition History

Many of Weinberg's flute pieces, including those on this album, were conceived for the flautist Alexander Korneyev.

Critical Reception

Despite official honors, Weinberg's reputation declined in his final decades and his death in 1996 went largely unnoticed, though his output has since gained increasing recognition.

Weinberg settled in Moscow in 1943 after his First Symphony impressed Shostakovich, and he remained there for the rest of his life.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Weinberg's extensive output, including 26 symphonies and 17 string quartets, is now highly regarded as a significant continuation of the Russian symphonic tradition.
