Philippe Hersant's contemporary work, Bamyan, is inspired by music he heard in Afghanistan and the destruction of the giant Buddhas in Bamyan by the Taliban in 2001.

The recording took place in May 2018 at La Courroie, a former 19th-century ramie spinning mill near Avignon, France, now a venue for concerts and recordings.
