Vytautas Bacevičius, born in Poland, chose a form of exile at age 21 by moving to Kaunas, Lithuania, his father's country, and changing his name from the Polish Witold.

Bacevičius was forced into exile during World War II while on a South American tour, becoming stateless after the Nazis invaded Lithuania and the Soviets took control, eventually settling in New York.

Bacevičius aimed to create a new theory of musical creation based on American occultist Claude Bragdon's philosophy, which posits music as the most important element of the Universe's existence.

Performer Biography

Gabrielius Alekna, the pianist on this recording, won second prize at the 2005 International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna and has performed with major orchestras in Lithuania and abroad.
