Bach: Arias for Alto
Did you know?
1/6Compositional Technique
Bach gave particular prominence to the alto voice, seeing it as an expression of suffering and compassion, and often paired it with oboes and oboes d'amore, which were associated with similar emotional states.
Compositional Technique
Bach often used the ABA aria da capo form, derived from Italian opera, in his solo vocal movements, but also ventured into irregular da capo structures and free forms, disregarding strict symmetry.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Bach's early years as Cantor in Leipzig saw a remarkable expansion of his expressive palette, even though he was already in his full maturity upon arrival.
Composition History
To meet the high demand for liturgical music, Bach sometimes reused and paraphrased earlier works, such as the cantata Barmherziges Herze der ewigen Liebe (BWV 185) from 1715, which was performed in Leipzig in 1723.
Composer Biography
As Cantor of the Nikolaikirche and Thomaskirche in Leipzig from May 1723, Johann Sebastian Bach was required to provide a cantata for each Sunday and holy day of the liturgical year.
