1/7Composer's Artistic Vision
Georg Philipp Telemann, a Kapellmeister, combined the French 'manner' with Italian grandezza to create an attractive mixed style that became a model for his German colleagues.
Composition History
The genre of the orchestral suite, inspired by Jean-Baptiste Lully's instrumental style, began its popularity in Thuringia with Philipp Heinrich Erlebach's 1693 publication of 'Six Overtures'.
Composition History
The four surviving Orchestral Suites (BWV 1066-1069) are likely only a fraction of a much larger group of works Bach composed in this genre.
Historical Context
The orchestral suite, often called an 'Overture' due to its substantial first movement, was very popular in 18th-century central Germany.
Interpretation
For the Orchestral Suite in A minor (BWV 1067), the performers have reconstructed a hypothetical earlier version with an oboe as the solo instrument, based on copying errors in the original parts.
Composer Biography
Johann Sebastian Bach learned the orchestral suite genre in his youth and continued to compose in it into his later Leipzig years.
