The Collegium Musicum, an ensemble Bach directed from 1729 to 1741, was founded in 1702 by Georg Philipp Telemann, a law student in Leipzig.
Instruments
Patrick Beuckels and Toshiyuki Shibata play traversos (baroque flutes) made by Giovanni Tardino, modeled after an instrument by J.W. Oberlender from around 1730.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded in the Café Miry, a pleasant space in the School of Arts of Ghent, to emulate the atmosphere of Bach's performances at Café Zimmermann.
Historical Context
The Café Zimmermann, a coffee house in Leipzig where Bach regularly performed, was destroyed during World War II and is now a tourist information center.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Bach consciously used 'few means' in his music to create an 'ocean of possibilities' and works of the highest level.
