Sally Beamish initially studied piano and harpsichord, performing concertos on both, before deciding to study violin and viola at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Sally Beamish and her husband, cellist Robert Irvine, founded the Chamber Group of Scotland with co-director James MacMillan after moving to Scotland in 1989.
