Composer Biography

Ferdinand Ries, Beethoven's long-serving pupil and assistant, was responsible for arranging Beethoven's String Trios Op. 9 for piano trio.

Beethoven's String Trios Op. 9 were first published in 1798, but an arrangement for piano trio was later announced in 1806 as his 'Opus 61'.

Ferdinand Ries's arrangement of Beethoven's string trios for piano trio shows great care, largely retaining the violin line and assigning the original cello part to the piano's left hand.
