The Requiem was a joint commission from the Oxford Bach Choir, the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas, and Music at Oxford.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Chilcott deliberately underplayed vengeful words in his Requiem, influenced by Fauré's Requiem, which he sang as a chorister.

The Nash Ensemble, featured on this album, has won The Edinburgh Festival Critics' music award and The Royal Philharmonic Society's small ensemble award twice.

Bob Chilcott, the composer, sang as a chorister at King's College, Cambridge, and later spent twelve years as a tenor with the world-famous King's Singers.

Composition History

Chilcott's Requiem is dedicated to his niece, Samantha Verschueren, who died at the age of twenty-three while he was writing the piece.

Performer Biography

Wells Cathedral Choir, featured on this album, celebrated its 1100th birthday in 2009 and was rated by Gramophone in 2010 as the greatest cathedral choir in the world.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Chilcott's Requiem includes an English movement, 'Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts', which he loves for its 'unbelievably English' sentiment of human fallibility.
