Charles Burney's Four Sonatas or Duets for two performers on one Pianoforte or Harpsichord, published in 1777, were the first printed edition of keyboard works for four hands.
Interpretation
For this recording, the performers chose a square, English model fortepiano, specifically to reconstruct the original atmosphere of Burney's sonatas.
Instruments
Although the sonatas mention both pianoforte and harpsichord, they are essentially works for the piano, with the harpsichord alternative added for commercial reasons.
Composition History
Burney paid out of his own pocket to publish his four-hand keyboard sonatas, recognizing the novelty of the enterprise.

Critical Reception
Despite paving the way for the four-hand keyboard repertoire, Burney's sonatas were not reprinted until 1988.
