Johann Philipp Förtsch, whose work is featured on this album, had a highly unusual career for his time, studying philosophy, medicine, and law before becoming a musician, and later abandoning music to become a doctor and political adviser.

When Buxtehude took over Franz Tunder's post at the Marienkirche, he was contractually obligated to marry one of Tunder's daughters; he married Anna Margareta.

Cultural Impact

The Abendmusiken, evening concerts of vocal and instrumental music directed by Buxtehude, were a unique attraction in Lübeck, not found anywhere else at the time.
