Two organ builders greatly admired by Dietrich Buxtehude, Hans Christoph Fritzsche and Arp Schnitger, were involved in the construction of the organs used for this recording.
Compositional Technique
Many of Buxtehude's preludes, such as Praeludium in A minor, BuxWV153, have a five-section form that alternates between free and contrapuntal passages to ensure variety.
Composer Biography
Dietrich Buxtehude, the composer, grew up in Helsingborg and Helsingør on the Öresund strait, where he began his career as an organist around 1657.
Historical Context
The chorale 'Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott', featured on this album, had special significance in the Altenbruch and Lüdingworth area, sung during rogation services at times of flood danger.
Instruments
The organs used for this recording are located in the villages of Altenbruch and Lüdingworth, near Cuxhaven, and are often called 'Peasants' Cathedrals'.

Dietrich Buxtehude saw himself primarily as a 'servant of the organ' and of God's word, rather than a virtuoso and composer.
Performer Biography
Masaaki Suzuki, the organist, founded the Bach Collegium Japan in 1990 and has toured widely as both a soloist and with the Collegium.
