After an early period of European avant-garde techniques, Celso Garrido-Lecca began incorporating indigenous Latin-American styles into his music, seeking an individual voice that avoids both 'rootless, academic cosmopolitanism and naive, provincial Indianism'.

Compositional Technique
In Symphonic Tableaux, Celso Garrido-Lecca uses the sound of a triangle to suggest the clashing metal scissors of the Peruvian dansak, a 'scissor dance' from Ayacucho.

Celso Garrido-Lecca received private lessons in serial technique from Dutch teacher Fré Focke and later studied with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood in 1964.
