Cécile Chaminade, born in Paris in 1857, began composing her own music at the age of ten after starting piano lessons with her mother.

Chaminade's father refused to send her to the Paris Conservatory to study among men, so she received private lessons from Conservatory faculty.
Critical Reception
After Chaminade's death, her music was unfairly generalized as 'salon ephemera' for amateurs, despite many pieces being virtuoso works.
